DIS is pleased to offer the latest breast cancer screening and diagnostic technology - 3D mammography (also known as breast tomosynthesis). No other mammography imaging center in Washington County offers this personalized service to their patients.

We are an integral part of the Center for Breast Health, a multi-specialty medical team composed of breast surgeons, radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, and a patient nurse navigator. Our radiologists work closely with the breast surgeons to ensure continuity and quality of care.

What can you expect with the 3D mammogram?

You’re most likely familiar with the traditional 2D mammogram, which takes x-ray images of each breast to detect abnormalities. 3D mammography takes additional images from varying angles to produce a 3-dimensional image of the breast. This allows the radiologist to view the tissue in smaller sections and in greater detail.

How long does a 3D mammogram take?

The 3D mammogram takes approximately the same amount of time to perform as a traditional mammogram.

What are the benefits of 3D mammograms?

  • Greater accuracy of detecting abnormalities
  • Earlier detection of smaller abnormal growths
  • Clearer images of dense breast tissue
  • Fewer repeat visits for additional imaging or testing

Are there any risks associated?

Approved for use by the FDA, the amount of radiation from tomosynthesis is not significantly different than 2D digital mammography.

Is 3D mammography covered by insurance?

Some but not all insurance companies pay for 3D mammography. Please contact us if you are unsure if it is covered by your insurance.
